What is the intake assessment like?

The Intake Assessment takes about an hour, and includes typical health and mental health questions. The assessment itself is called a bio-psycho-social assessment, which means you will be asked information about your health history, your psychological history, and your relationships/background. After the intake assessment, your therapist will create a treatment plan based on your current symptoms. This treatment plan is discussed in the first session following the assessment.

How quickly can I expect results?

This really differs from client to client. You might see an immediate change just from being able to get some of the stress off your chest during the intake. After the intake, if you do consistent deep-work sessions, such as parts and memory therapy, you will see results very quickly. For most, sessions are a balance of deep work, and talk therapy, and you will see that your feelings about healing will ebb and flow over time. Some sessions feel great. Others make you feel like you need a nap. Your therapist will help guide you through the toughest parts of therapy, and be there to remind you of your progress when the commitment to healing feels challenging.

How long will I be in therapy?

There is no exact prediction of when you will be “done” with therapy. You might have one issue you want to tackle, and you may tackle it in a few months. However, if you are in it for the long haul, and want to peel back all the layers of your psychological existence, you can be in therapy a long time, and go through many different life events with your therapist. It is suggested to take breaks, and these will be built into the yearly schedule at Bradley Healing Collective. Furthermore, it is suggested that you begin with weekly appointments for at least the first month, and then you and your therapist can discuss spacing out appointments depending on your current needs. You have the autonomy to change your therapeutic experience.

What is a session like?

No two clients are exactly the same, but you can expect to ground and review your current life events and symptoms within the first 10-15 minutes of session. After that, expect a deep dive into Parts and Memory, inner child work, Neuro Linguistic Programming, or other interventions. Some sessions you may just need or want to vent, and there is space for that too. If you need it, your therapist might recommend ending every session with breathwork or more grounding techniques, but sessions will always adapt to your current needs.

Where is my information kept?

Once you establish a therapeutic relationship with BHC, all session information is kept within Simple Practice, an EHR platform that is HIPPA compliant (as secure as those used by medical doctors). You will be provided with a direct line to your therapist, and any texts sent to them through there, will become a contact record created and stored within Simple Practice. The same rule applies to emails.

Is there homework?

While therapy will be less effective if you do not practice certain changes or integrate suggested healing practices outside of your sessions, you can choose to reserve your healing for in sessions. Worksheets, meditation practices, and other reading materials might be recommended by your therapist, but they are never mandatory, and, like with every other aspect of therapy, you have the autonomy to ask for more or less work in-between sessions.

Can you re-traumatize yourself doing trauma work?

While the simple answer is no, this is only true if you are provided with the tools to practice trauma work in a safe container in your mind. Parts and Memory has some parallels to EMDR, so anytime. you are instructed to visit a traumatic memory, you will be given tools to decompress. Just because you feel tired or “worse” after a session does not mean you are being re-traumatized. Sometimes you need to bring “bad” feeling to the surface in order to let them go. This is why incorporating rest post-sessions as much as possible is the key to healthy integration of trauma work. Rest and sleep states are pivotal for your sub-conscious brain in its ability to integrate your trauma healing into the neural networks of your brain.
